One thing I’ve always been self-conscious of has definitely been my smile. Years of drinking too many caffeinated beverages like pop, tea, and coffee multiple times a day has led to me having rather dull and yellowish coloured teeth. It’s pretty embarrassing when we have family pictures taken and one thing I constantly have to ask is for the photographer to make sure my teeth look “whiter” than they normally do. For years I’ve always meant to have my teeth whitened but I’ve either been pregnant, breast feeding, or simply too afraid of the have teeth sensitivity. My teeth and gums already have a tendency to become irritated or sore if I brush too hard and I’ve heard so many stories of people having unbearable sensitivity that I assumed I would fall into that category myself.

A few weeks ago I was contacted by the folks at Smile Brilliant and asked if I wanted to partner up with them for a spring campaign. I was a little hesitant at first given how worried I’ve been in the past about whitening my teeth but Emma was so friendly and helpful with all my questions that I decided to give it a go. The awesome thing about Smile Brilliant is that they create custom molded whitening trays to ensure you get the best results possible! Instead of those over the counter brand strips, you’re sent a full kit with all the instructions on how to create the perfect dental mold. Once you’ve completed your kit, you simply send it back to them and they’ll create the trays and then send you them in the mail. Each kit comes with everything you’ll need; the two kinds of putty and paste, the tray holders, as well as all your whitening and sensitivity gels. Making the molds takes no time at all! In fact, I was done within a few minutes and although it feels a little weird while you’re making them, it’s not bothersome at all. I’ve have dental molds taken in the past by my dentist and this was WAY easier and less time consuming.

Once I had mailed off my molds, Smile Brilliant sent me trays in a few short weeks. I started the process at the end of May and they say it does take about 6-8 weeks to obtain good results. I was honestly so skeptical on how these trays were going to work and the first few attempts took a bit of getting used to. It was a matter of figuring out how much gel to use since you’re sent all the gels you should need (three or four I believe) it takes a few times to realize you don’t actually need to overload the trays. Less is more in this case and I definitely put a tad too much the first time or two I tried them out. For optimal results you need to leave them on for between 45 minutes up to three hours depending on sensitivity and your tolerance. Then you need to apply the sensitivity gel for another 15-20 minutes. The hard part for me was figuring out when exactly the “right time” was. I’m a huge late night snacker and because you can’t eat or drink while whitening, it meant either changing up my snacking habits (probably not a bad thing!) or trying it when I know I don’t eat as much. I opted for middle of the afternoon unless I was working which then I would switch to night time use.

For me personally, three hours was too long. I could tell my gums were getting sensitive and there were times when they felt like they were pulsating. Emma, my Smile Brilliant rep was wonderful about giving me tips and tricks to help ease my painful gums. One thing that really worked was using a thin layer of coconut oil on them while using the trays. I also had to take a few days off here and there just depending on my work schedule. Being a nurse means working shift work and there were just days where I was either too tired, too hungry, or just completely forgot I was supposed to be whitening my teeth but overall I’m super happy with the results from my Smile Brilliant experience.
